The Morning Journal: Right at Home Rocky River Aims to Support Individuals with Specialized In-Home Care

Right at Home Rocky River owner Albano Mahilaj has served as the location’s owner since 2023. Mahilaj came to the U.S. from Albania in 2008.

Right at Home, 20575 Center Ridge Road in Rocky River, Ohio, aims to provide relief to seniors and disabled individuals in the community.

The corporate office of Right at Home is a nationwide organization with headquarters located in Omaha, Nebraska, with the Rocky River location serving western Cuyahoga County and Lorain County.

Albano Mahilaj came to the US in 2008 from Albania, and has served as the location’s owner since 2023. He said it was his mission to live the American dream.

“If there is a place in the world that allows you to do what you love, this is it,” Mahilaj said.

He attended Cleveland State University and worked in the corporate world for several years.

Mahilaj said his ambition changed when his 8-year-old son was diagnosed with autism.

“I wanted to create a better future for him, because I couldn’t help but think, who is going to take care of him when we aren’t here anymore?” the father said. “In a nutshell, Right at Home has given us the opportunity to create something for our families while serving others.”

The Right at Home location in Rocky River has 40 caretakers and serves 30 clients in the community.

The organization offers services ranging from basic housework to 24/7 care and specialized support for individuals with chronic medical conditions. Caretakers are required to take courses through the organization’s Right at Home University.

“If you’re a caretaker who hasn’t dealt with a certain demographic of patient, we have several courses we can assign you to so you can learn more,” Mahilaj said.

Caregivers also provide services at nursing homes, long-term care facilities, and are required to meet with the families before they begin the care.

Mahilaj said the services go beyond the patients.

“The best gift that we have is seeing the relief on the family’s faces,” Mahilaj said.

“For lack of a better word, sometimes an adult with a disability can become a burden, and we don’t want families to be limited to what they can do during their day-to-day lives.”

Mahilaj said he is grateful to be able to aid in the care of individuals within his community.

“I’m very lucky to be in the United States and in Rocky River and build a business that makes me sleep well at night,” Mahilaj said.

“My biggest ‘why’ in the beginning was my son, and now it has become all of the families that we serve and all the caregivers I’m responsible for.”
