Right at Home in Bedford, MA, is an in-home care franchise celebrating its 20th anniversary this week.

The agency, based at 60 The Great Road, employs some 250 caregivers – most of them working full schedules – and serves 350 clients, including elderly and disabled, with individually tailored care plans.

The anniversary celebration was timed to coincide with Bedford Day, which is coming up on Saturday, Sept. 21. Right at Home plans a networking event for referral sources and its national and other partners for Thursday and an open house for all from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. Also on the agenda are two booths at the Bedford Day street fair, one staffed by nurses taking blood-pressure readings and answering questions.

Ted and Peg Bernhardt acquired the 61st franchise of Omaha-based Right at Home in 2004. Today there are more than 700 franchise locations in the U.S. and five other countries.

Bernhardt spent the first part of his career in financial management with technology and publishing firms. He said he pivoted to the home-care industry after serving as a caregiver for his aging parents and in-laws.

Right at Home opened in Bedford in the historic Bacon House, then six years later moved up the street into the former Boston Federal Savings Bank. The Bedford franchise is designated Boston Northwest, covering 20 towns.

“A lot of people think this is a facility” for care, Peg Bernhardt said. The building does include space for training.

Initially, the Bernhardts cared for clients themselves. Their first employee was Laura Reynolds, who today holds the position of client services director. Bernhardt said when they began, it was all about “companion care” – help with food shopping, dressing, and hygiene, dog walking, meal preparing, driving to medical appointments. Then they started to build a nursing team.
