Franchisee Profile: Jerry Lawson of Lansdale, PA
Name: Jerry Lawson
Market: Lansdale, PA
Jerry Lawson knew he wanted to be an entrepreneur at an early age. As a student, the American Red Cross Board Member, started a paper route company with his brother, but later in life was not fulfilling his goal. With a background in healthcare, the 30 year Bucks County resident, worked with a Fortune 500 company and was exposed to proper care and the ability it has to improve the quality of life of those in need. After undergoing knee replacement surgery, Jerry found himself in a complicated situation upon arriving home from the hospital. This ignited his interest in home care and he connected with a Right at Home Franchisee. Realizing the similarities between his and Right at Home methodologies, he then knew Right at Home would be the perfect fit for him.
Q: Where did you grow up?
A: I grew up in Baltimore and have been a resident of Bucks County, Pa. for more than 30 years. I've served as a board member for the American Red Cross, leading fundraising efforts for a local homeless shelter. I also actively serve on the board for a local charter school in my area, which enables me to contribute to improving the quality of education in my community.
Q: What was your career before franchising?
A: I was an executive for a Fortune 500 healthcare company, and had the opportunity to see firsthand how proper care can have a positive impact and improve the quality of living for people in need. Some of my work included sharing information about products for patients suffering from debilitating diseases like Alzheimer's and dementia.
Q: How did you learn about Right at Home?
A: I had my right knee fully replaced 2 ½ years ago. I did a lot of research for the surgery and for physical therapy, but one thing I didn’t think about, was what I do when I get home. I was fortunate that my daughter and fiancée stepped in to help during my recovery. Then last summer, I had an accident and ruptured the tendon in my left leg and went through the same process. This got me thinking about the homecare industry. I contacted a broker, who suggested a variety of homecare businesses, but none of them quite fit what I was looking for until I came across Right at Home. I spoke to a current franchisee who also had a corporate background like myself. He told me about his journey and said that the Right at Home had a high caliber leadership, and they provided excellent systems and training to give franchisees the best opportunity to find success. He went on to say that Right at Home had lived up to every commitment they had made from the beginning, which really impressed me.
Q: Why did you decide to open your own business?
A: I feel like my life has gone full circle. I always wanted to be an entrepreneur, starting from when I was a kid and my brother and I ran a paper route company. I went on to work in corporate America, and have now come back to running my own business. When looking for an opportunity, I looked for a business where being a baby boomer myself would provide me an advantage. I was looking for a business where my expertise and skill set as a sales trainer and leader would transfer well. And that’s exactly what Right at Home has provided me.
Q: What was most appealing to you about joining a franchise system as opposed to starting your own business?
A: Since opening in February, Right at Home has been there every step of the way. From finding an office location to the technology, to recruiting I’ve felt so much support. Right at Home has the methodology and systems down, so you don’t have to start from scratch.
Q: What are your hobbies? What do you like to do for fun?
A: I love to play golf!
